Teen to Lead State-Wide Organization

May 8, 2009  -  At 14, Kayla Watson has already had opportunities that most girls her age only dream of. The beauty queen, who is the reigning Miss North Georgia Junior Teen, has been the Grand Marshall at not one but two Disney World parades, has been featured in national glamour magazines, and has walked the runway in front of famous designers.

Now she can add one more thing to her list: newly appointed leader of Queens for a Cure (Q4C), a state-wide organization that aims to involve, inspire and unite pageant queens to raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society.

As a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society, Kayla was excited to hear the news that she would be the new leader of the Q4C organization. Started by one of her mentors, former Miss Georgia International Lacie Smith, Q4C has raised nearly $100,000 for cancer research since its inception. Kayla has been involved in the organization under Lacie's leadership since it was created in 2004.

“I’m so excited that Queens for a Cure is getting passed on to Kayla,” said Lacie Smith, Q4C Founder and Community Manager for the American Cancer Society in Athens. “Kayla is such a hard working girl and will do the best job taking over the leadership of Queens for a Cure. She has been there from the beginning, and I feel like this has just been in God’s plan from the start.”

Kayla will be responsible for uniting and working with beauty queens from varying state pageant systems – from the small local pageants to the big players like Miss Georgia America, USA and International. She will be in charge of spearheading fundraising campaigns, promoting public awareness of cancer through public service initiatives, and leading in the effort to raise money for the American Cancer Society.  At the Relay for Life event, Q4C will give cancer survivors “the royal treatment” by crowning them with tiaras.

"Feeling like you made an impact in someone’s life is such an amazing feeling," said Kayla.  "We all know people who have been affected by cancer.”

Kayla has already lined up a core group of queens to work closely with her under her leadership to ensure Q4C’s success this year, and will begin accepting additional team members from statewide title holders in June.

Queens for a Cure will host its first fundraiser to benefit Relay for Life next month. The Miss Walton County Relay for Life Pageant will be held on June 27, and is taking contestant applications through its website, www.waltonpageant.webs.com.

Kayla also plans to have a formalwear consignment sale in the fall as an additional fundraiser. She hopes to raise several thousand dollars this year for the American Cancer Society through Q4C.

“It’s a huge honor to be leading Queens for a Cure,” said Kayla. “I’ve been involved with Queens for a Cure since it started, so it’s a huge privilege to carry it on and follow in the footsteps of Lacie, who is such an amazing leader."
